Skopje is the capital city of the Republic of Macedonia and one of the main tourist places in Macedonia. It was inhabited for more than 4000 years before the birth of Christ. Throughout the centuries it was constantly destroyed and rebuild by many conquerors and nations until the devastating earthquake on July 26th 1963 where 90% of the city lied in ruins. Yet the city still managed to rise up from the ashes once again and restored its old glory. If you haven't managed to travel to Macedonia yet, now is the time to do it.
After receiving help from 87 countries around the globe Skopje was reconstructed based on the concept from one of the great Japanese architects at the time named Kenzo Tange. Currently the city of Skopje is a cultural, historical, political and economic center of Macedonia and claims the name of “city of solidarity”.
Through times the city of Skopje was influenced by different cultures, religions and nations who all had their own mark on what the city is today, however the biggest influence of unique architecture was left by the ruling of the Otoman empire.
Today we can see the testament of those times on most of the buildings, covering different periods of the history and events that took place in Skopje region such as the churches, the old bazaar, mosques, ottoman baths, one of the best preserved aqueducts in the Balkans and much more. You can visit all this in the tours we offer.
